How effective is online counselling and therapy?
This is a relatively new way of delivering psychological help, yet there is much research to investigate the efficacy of video-based therapy (see references below). Statistical findings have demonstrated that video methods can produce significant improvements in mental health and well-being. Studies have also shown that online treatment is equal in efficacy compared to face-to-face therapy and that satisfaction among clients has been rated as high.
Research indicates that the use of video-based therapy is successful for a number of different mental health-based difficulties and problems.
There are many ways in which online counselling is similar to face-to-face work. Online counselling still allows for important factors for effective practice, such as real-time communication, verbal cues, eye contact, therapeutic alliance and observing some body language.
How secure is counselling via SKYPE?
Skype is a secure application that uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). This means that it is very difficult for a third party to hack a call. It is best used when both parties have reliable internet connection.

Technical details: It is important to have a high speed internet connection and be familiar with Skype (which is a free to use and download, video conferencing software http://www.skype.com/en/). Also it is important to have a quiet place to talk, such as an office or bedroom, but wherever it is make sure the connection is excellent. Often times this means plugging directly into the ethernet cable, instead of using a wireless router. If a router is used make sure no one else is streaming video off the router at the same time. We will meet for about an hour and look in depth at anything which you would like to talk about. Of course, please bring your most pressing concerns forward first and we will talk about those. Even if you are unsure what to talk about, it normally will come out in the beginning of the meeting.
